Description
This is a blacksmith-made 18th century mattock dug using a metal detector along Indian Creek in present day Monroe County, West Virginia, at the site of an 18th century frontier cabin. Mattocks were hand tools similar to a pick axe, used for cutting, digging, or whatever needed to be done. They were a necessity on the frontier, in the days before the weed whacker.
