The Cree (Cree: Néhinaw, Néhiyaw, etc.; French: Cri) are one of the largest groups of First Nations in North America. In Canada, over 350,000 people are Cree or have Cree ancestry. The major proportion of Cree in Canada live north and west of Lake Superior, in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. About 27,000 live in Quebec.

In the United States, Cree people historically lived from Lake Superior westward. Today, they live mostly in Montana, where they share the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation with Ojibwe (Chippewa) people. The documented westward migration over time has been strongly associated with their roles as traders and hunters in the North American fur trade. (Wikipedia).

Here’s another sheath I found that was auctioned by Bonhams’s from the Collection of Mario Luraschi, which sold at auction for $3,750, even without the knife:

Here’s the info from Bonham’s:

A CREE BEADED KNIFE SHEATH On commercial harness leather, the unadorned lower section in contrast to the densely beaded top worked in converging triangular bands, tin cone suspensions hung midway.
length 10 1/2in. Mallet, Sylvie, editor, 2009, p. 78.

Here’s one I found that was auctioned by Skinner’s, which sold for $4,800 back in 2013:

Here’s the information on it from Skinner’s:

Plains Cree Beaded Buffalo Hide Knife Sheath, c. third quarter 19th century, with a thick buffalo hide liner, the front beaded with multicolored geometric designs using very small seed beads, the back partially beased (bead loss), includes old knife, lg. 9 1/4 in.
Estimate $3,000-5,000

  1. Beautiful knife & sheaths. Amazing what prices these things go for. I, there is less artifacts available to find & sale. Thanks for posting. Going to our property in Fries Virginia. This weekend to scout around & do some metal detecting. Hopefully we\\\’ll get some good finds.
